" Building on the work of others is an inherent part of the process of scientific discovery. But determining who gets the credit for each new development can be a convoluted and political process, shaped by entrenched notions of seniority and by aggressive self-promotion. "

I AM SCIENCE: Going Mad Before Going Science

iamsciencestories:

" I tend to think that theists who go to doctors instead of relying on god’s healing power do so because they just don’t have enough faith in their particular deity to get the job done. So, in order to maintain said deity’s relevance, the idea is put forth that god is still doing his miraculous work, he’s just doing it through the hands of a well-educated medical specialist. And that’s all well and good, except when doctors screw up. So I wonder what the logic is, then, when this happens because god certainly can’t screw up a healing. Maybe god picks and chooses which doctors he’s going to send his magic power through. And how does a potential patient know which doctor is likely to get that cosmic healing power when they’re ready to make an appointment? I’m so confused. "

Why can't a person tickle himself?: Scientific American

The answer lies at the back of the brain in an area called the cerebellum, which is involved in monitoring movements. Our studies at University College London have shown that the cerebellum can predict sensations when your own movement causes them but not when someone else does. When you try to tickle yourself, the cerebellum predicts the sensation and this prediction is used to cancel the response of other brain areas to the tickle.
